Washington (AP) – Liam and Olivia dominate. Always.
The two names have, for a sixth year, at the top of the list of names for babies born in the United States in 2024.
The Social Security Administration follows the names given to girls and boys every year in each state, with names dating back to 1880. In time for Mother’s Day, the agency published the most popular names of applications for social security cards on Friday.
Liam has reigned for eight consecutive years for boys, while Olivia is leading the list of girls for six. In addition, for the sixth consecutive year, Emma has taken the second location for girls and Noah for boys.
The names of the Luna girls slipped from the top 10 and was replaced by Sofia, who entered the number 10 for the first time.
After Liam, the most common names for boys are, in order: Noah, Oliver, Theodore, James, Henry, Mateo, Elijah, Lucas and William.
After Olivia, the most common names for girls are Emma, Amelia, Charlotte, Mia, Sophia, Isabella, Evelyn, Ava and Sofia.
Sophie Kihm, editor -in -chief of Nameberry, a denomination website, said that the latest data show how American parents are choosing more and more names that have an intercultural attraction. Kihm’s first name appears in two variations on the annual list.
“A trend that we follow is that Americans are more likely to choose heritage choices,” said Kihm, including names that work “no matter where you are in the world”.
“More and more families in the United States come from mixed cultural backgrounds and I hear that parents generally ask to want their child to travel and have a relatively easy-to-understand name.”
The latest data from the Social Security Administration show that 3.61 million babies were born in the United States in 2024. This is a slight increase compared to the 3.59 million babies from last year, which represents a global increase in the American birth rate.
Social media and popular television stars have a certain impact on the growing popularity of certain names, says social security.
Among those who increase in popularity for girls: Ailary, a Hawaiian name which means “chef”, is at the top of the list. The names of the boys Truce, an old English name meaning “peace”, increased 11,118 places in last year’s position in the 991 ranking.
The complete and viewable list of baby names is on the Social Security website.
