Lee Zeldin takes the helm in New York from Governor Kathy Hochul

A shocking new poll puts Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) just ahead of Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) in the race for governor of New York.

The co/effective poll found that 45.6% of likely voters in New York support Zeldin, just ahead of Hochul’s 45.3%. This pollster is the same pollster that predicted Governor Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) victory over Democrat Terry McAuliffe last year.

Zeldin has the edge over Hochul primarily due to growing support from registered Democrats, according to co/effective pollster Ryan Munce.

“The race has tightened over the past few weeks and now it looks like it’s a stalemate,” Munce told the New York Post. “The change was spearheaded by predominantly white and Hispanic registered Democrats who defected to support Zeldin, the Republican nominee.”

Additionally, the poll found that Zeldin has a higher favor rating than Hochul, whose favor numbers are lower than President Joe Biden’s.

The survey found that 40.8% of voters have a favorable opinion of Zeldin, while Hochul’s favor sits at 36.5%, nearly 2% lower than Biden’s numbers.

Zeldin retains a significant advantage over Hochul among independent voters, with 47% backing Zeldin and only 36% backing Hochul.

Zeldin told the New York Post:

The stakes couldn’t be higher and the polls couldn’t be closer. We need every New Yorker who is sick of the attacks on our wallets, safety, children’s education, etc., to come out and vote and save our state. This is our last chance to transform New York by firing Kathy Hochul, electing new leaders to restore balance to Albany, secure our streets, and put New York’s working families first.

Zeldin on Thursday called on Hochul to agree to several televised debates ahead of the November election, as the two candidates are currently scheduled to debate once, just two weeks before the election.

Zeldin noted that Hochul, who took office after disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo (D) resigned amid accusations of sexual harassment, was not elected to the position she holds.

Zeldin said in a letter to Hochul:

If I understand correctly, you are desperately trying to get away with just one debate with Spectrum News on the evening of Tuesday, October 25th. A debate may be the lowest standard you unfortunately aspire to, but it’s not enough. It’s time for you to face the music, Kathy. No one even elected you Governor and you are acting as Emperor Governor for a 16th term with enormous disregard for New Yorkers.

Zeldin’s surge in the polls comes as crime increasingly becomes a priority for New York voters.

As Breitbart News reported:

While inflation has increased across the country, crime is rampant in the Empire State. New York Democrats in 2019 passed the so-called “No Bail” law which eventually eliminated bail for a number of criminal suspects accused of committing crimes.

Zeldin swore that, if elected, he would strike down the bail law, while Hochul continued to defend its provisions.

The co/effective poll surveyed 1,056 likely New York voters between Oct. 18 and Oct. 19. The survey’s margin of error is ±3.31%.
