Lebrun: Dallas stars are built to score. So what’s going on?

Edmonton – The thing about Mikko Rantanen is, nobody is more difficult for him than him.

It is held to high standards. He expects to produce offensively to help his team win matches. He was a proven producer of the playoffs throughout his career.

So, to spend seven consecutive games without scoring a goal, and to be held at two assists at the Western Conference final so far, it is irritating as a devil for him.

“Yeah, you know, I try to help and I could not do this series as much as necessary to win matches,” said Rantanen after Dallas Stars lost 4-1 Tuesday evening in match 4 to follow the series with the ilers of Edmonton 3-1. “So I will try to reset myself tomorrow and try to find keys to get a rebound or two and try to help us win a match.”

It is not surprising that Rantanen possessed it. It is not one to look for excuses or pointed fingers. He looks in the mirror and does not see the superstar version of Mikko Rantanen who must be there at the moment.

It is far from being the only stars in difficulty at the moment. This is a problem on the team level, but Rantanen is the superstar, the guy who is supposed to show the path offensively. It is not, and the stars are in an important hole.

What happens with a stars team that probably has the most before the NHL depth?

Wyatt Johnston seems to have lost his confidence, which often happens with young players, but this happens at a crucial time. But he is not alone. From top to bottom of this group forward, there are few goals to find at the moment.

For what?

The stars were at the top of the playoffs after two laps in a large part of the Rush Chances analysis, and created a large part of their attack in this way against Colorado and Winnipeg. But the Oilers have done a great job without allowing them to get a lot of chances of strange precipitation. The other thing? For a team like Dallas, which is normally followed by sharp and high slots points, the oilers have really done a good job and block the shots.

The stars had good intentions on Tuesday evening. They struck the oilers with 39 attempts to shoot during the opening period and, according to Natural Stat Trick, had an advantage of 20-8 in chances of score at five, including 6-2 in high chances of danger. But they left the ice after 20 minutes down 1-0.

Talk about deflation.

“A bit of the same story, right? I can’t get this lead,” said the stars head coach Pete Deboer. “Yeah, I loved our first rules. Aside that I thought I had missed the net too much. I think 15 failed shots. We have to make things a little more difficult and make sure that we hit nets in these situations. But really, to play a period like that and not go out even or down, you are in fact declining a goal, it’s a difficult situation.”

Addition of Rantanen: “The start of the match this evening reminded me of the second period of match 3. We were on them, creating almost every quarter of work, and they always get the first objective. This is the frustrating part. But this is not the time of the year to be frustrated. You have to reset and come back. ” ”

The stars had 16 failed shots among these 39 firing attempts during the first period. Stuart Skinner does it come in the head? Do they try to be too cute?

“I mean, how many these have hit the net?” Tyler Seguin said when he was asked for attempts to shoot first period. “I feel like we’ve missed the net. I felt like I had missed the net. There are things to do better. Obviously, getting gunshots is great. Hit the net a little more, put the guys a little more in front of their goalkeeper. Answer a little more. “

Addition of Rantanen: “It is important to hit the net, try to get a rebound even or something like that. Maybe we try to get too hard, trying too offensively. We have to relax a little.”

Again, let’s not underestimate what is going on here. The stars were the third highest NHL team this year. Then they added Rantanen. They have good players on each line. They are built to score.

Yes, the score is more difficult in the playoffs, that’s for sure. But to be limited to two goals in the last three games, against a goalkeeper who was supposed to be the weak link on the list of ilers – something is not added.

It’s strange, really.

“I would not say strange. These are the playoffs. Everyone tightens defensively,” said winger Jason Robertson, who scored the only goal of the stars on the power game in the second period. “Chances of scoring are a bonus. But I mean, we receive a lot of shooting attempts, many photos that (a) rebounded and so on.

Stars are a veteran team. It takes a lot to make them vibrate. Is their offensive confidence shaken now?

“You continue to work,” said Seguin. “This period of the year, it is a question of doing things inside. Everything is about this effect. We are worth rewarding one of these games or some additional goals? Probably. But no matter what you deserve. Going home and continue to cring and I hope things change here.”

Getting a lead would help. The Oilers scored first in the four games in this series. It was an accent on the stars before match 4, to finally take a lead. It was not for lack of trying in the first period. But they hunted the match again, the oilers taking 1-0 and 2-1 before ranging the match with two empty-empted goals.

“Just having trouble getting the first goal, which would be important in the playoffs, if you can play with your head,” said Rantanen. “We did not do it much during these series series. We did not score the first goal several times. I think the guys worked hard in the first period. We were better than them at five years and obviously, they got a goal (Power-Play). We pushed very hard this evening, but two goals of power play for them and only for us.”

Normally, a team flowing for the game has this third -time push, and it becomes more aggressive while it tries to make offenses.

Shots on the stars of match 3 in the third period? Four.

Shots on the stars of match 4 in the third period? Four.

“They locked it quite well,” said Seguin. “There was not much there. For us forward, we have to do a better work of washer investments and keep him away from Skinner. He made good games as goalkeeper there. ”

Then there are special teams. The stars also lose this battle. Oilers have five goals in digital advantage in the series, including two Tuesday evening.

“We have to make a kill tonight,” said Deboer after the match.

Look at this in this way. Oilers and avalanche are very similar teams with regard to their high octane offenses. Colorado had a hard time for power play in the first round against Dallas, and the AVS estimated that it was a huge factor in the loss of this series against the stars. The dangerous power game of the Oilers, on the other hand, finds a way to produce. And it was a major factor in this series.

So where are the stars of here? They are 7-2 at home in these playoffs. They have to take care of business on Thursday evening in match 5. But they will still have to steal one in Rogers place in match 6 on Saturday evening to have the chance to make the magic return.

“It’s time to reset again,” said Rantanen. “It’s not over as long as someone is winning four games. Now we are going to home at home. You don’t think about what the series is. Winning a match. And trying to return to Alberta.”
