Rapper and actor Ice-T, who played a police officer in Law & Order: SVU for 24 years, was caught on police camera having a heated verbal exchange with a New Jersey officer during a traffic stop.
Ice-T, whose real name is Tracy Lauren Marrow, was arrested in May in North Bergen, New Jersey, by a Hudson County Sheriff’s officer, but only now has video of the police has been made public.
In the video, the officer appears to have stopped the actor for a missing license plate on the front of his Porsche. But we also discover that the car’s registration expired in 2021.
The officer informs Ice-T of the registration problem and the actor responds that the Motor Vehicle Commission office is nearby and he was going there to renew his registration. The officer then asks if Ice-T has a reservation at the MVC, to which the actor responds, “I don’t need one.” They know me,” TMZ reported.
In New Jersey, the Department of Motor Vehicles suggests drivers make an appointment in advance to conduct business with the department, but appointments are not required and walk-ins are possible.
The MVC issue remained a sticking point for the officer and the actor then suggested, “Why don’t you follow me to this garage, the DMV is right here,” and added, “You don’t you don’t need to be so serious. about this. Well, you can, but you don’t have to.
The officer responds that it’s serious and that the actor is not supposed to drive anywhere without legal registration, then tells Ice-T that he will have the car towed to the police impound .
“You’re not going to tow my fucking vehicle, let me park my car here,” Ice-T said and added that he could just walk to the MVC, get the car sticker and bring it back.
But the officer is adamant on the issue and says: “You will not move your car, give me the keys right now and I will tow your vehicle.” Try to be more respectful to me and I will be more respectful to you.
At that point, Ice-T gets out of the car, hands over his keys, and barks, “Give me my papers, you’re an asshole.” And then he looks directly at the officer’s body camera and says, “Give me my fucking papers, film them.” »
As the actor begins to use his cell phone to record the incident, the officer calls his supervisor. Upon arrival, the supervising sergeant decides to allow the actor to walk to the MVC and collect his new sticker, then return on foot and retrieve his car without it being towed.
The officer then returns the actor’s keys and says, “Just show a little respect.” » With one more line, Ict-T says, “I don’t need to do that” and leaves the stage.
It was reported that the actor paid all fines in full.
Before becoming an actor, Ice-T became the center of controversy with his group Body Count when they released their famous song, Cop Killerin 1992. The song expresses unapologetic hatred of law enforcement and suggests that black people should kill police officers.
The rapper insisted that the song was not a call to kill the cops, but an artistic presentation of a particular type of character.
“This song is about someone who is fed up with police brutality,” he said at the time, according to Yahoo News. “This is not a call to arms. It’s the cry of frustration of a character in a song. If you think I’m promoting violence, then you haven’t been listening.
However, after backlash, Ice-T removed the song from future pressings of the album to avoid harming his label.
