A panel of three judges recognized on Monday the guilty of embezzlement of the European Parliament and sentenced it to four years in prison – two of which are suspended and the other two which will be signified in interior residence – it inflicted a fine of € 100,000 and immediately prevented it from presenting itself to the public for the next five years.
This decision seemed to eliminate the Pen of the race for the next presidential election of France in 2027, unless a court of appeal reverses the decision. The Paris Court of Appeal published on Tuesday a statement indicating that it would hear the PEN appeal and made a decision before the summer of 2026.
The decision to prohibit Le Pen from running immediately sparked the condemnation of his allies to the country and abroad. Some have judged the undemocratic decision, although many of their discussion points distort what happened during the trial and the controversy.
While few have called into question Le Pen’s guilt, even some of his opponents have publicly asked if the courts should be authorized to immediately apply inadmissibility – rather than waiting for the appeal process to end. In France, most sanctions are lifted during the call process.
The backlash has also led to threats to the judges involved in the case, one of which has since received protection against police.
