Latest news on Antonio Pierce after Mark Davis regret with Rich Bisaccia

If Antonio Pierce is stripped of the interim tag and becomes Josh McDaniels’ permanent replacement as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, he might owe a small debt of gratitude to Rich Bisaccia.

The MMQB’s Albert Breer reported Tuesday that Raiders owner Mark Davis “regretted not giving Rich Bisaccia a full chance after the 2021 interim coach took the Raiders to the playoffs and nearly eliminated the eventual AFC champion Bengals in the wild-card round.”

Simply pointing out Bisaccia’s 7-5 record as interim coach of the Raiders doesn’t do justice to the job he’s done.

Jon Gruden resigned amid a scandal over racist, anti-gay and misogynistic language he used in his emails for several years. Damon Arnette, a 2020 first-round pick, was released in November 2021 following several off-field incidents. Henry Ruggs III, another 2020 first-rounder, was arrested the same month for his role in a fatal car crash.

Through it all, the Raiders made the playoffs for the first time since 2016. That wasn’t enough for Bisaccia to stay, however, as McDaniels was hired in January 2022. He quickly landed with the Green Bay Packers to become their special teams coordinator. .

Pierce hasn’t faced the same kind of challenges as Bisaccia, but there’s no doubt he’s had to clean up the mess his predecessor left behind.

Many had written off Las Vegas following a 3-5 which could even have flattered the team. Now the Raiders are 7-8 and just one game out of the final wild card spot. Pierce’s impact has been evident, leading to increasing calls for him to stay beyond this season.

Davis told Tashan Reed of The Athletic that his search for a new head coach and general manager will be “wide open,” so he will consider many outside candidates. However, it appears Pierce has a leg up on the competition.
