The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office on Monday filed three murder charges against Liliana Carrillo, accusing her of killing her three young children in a Reseda apartment before fleeing to the San Joaquin Valley.
Prosecutors alleged that Carrillo, 30, killed her 3-year-old daughter, Joanna; her 2 year old son, Terry; and her baby daughter, Sierra, 5 months, on April 10, and said she used a knife as a deadly weapon in the murder of her youngest child.
The LA County District Attorney’s Office did not file a special circumstances allegation for multiple murders, barring prosecutors from seeking life without parole on conviction. After taking office, Dist. Atty. George Gascón has barred prosecutors in his office from filing allegations of special circumstances leading to a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
It is not known when Carrillo will be brought to justice on the LA County charges. Carrillo is still being held in a Kern County jail in lieu of $ 2 million bail on charges of carjacking and car theft. Last week, she confessed to killing her children during an interview from a Bakersfield prison with a local NBC affiliate.
“I drowned them,” she said, claiming that she had done it “gently” and that she had killed them to protect them from sexual abuse. “I hugged them and kissed them and apologized all the time.”
In a statement issued by a spokesperson, Gascón said his office has reached out to surviving relatives “to offer trauma-informed services during these incredibly difficult times.”
“Our hearts go out to the families of these children who are facing this tremendous loss,” Gascón said in the statement.
