Observed as a federal holiday on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who died while serving in the United States military. A number of ceremonies around the Southland will honor fallen service members.
Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer and is often observed with barbecues and other celebrations that stray from its solemn roots.
