latest news Chasm debris causes southbound lanes to close on I-5 in Glendale
Southbound Highway 5 in Glendale was closed Saturday night after debris fell from an overpass onto the roadway.
An apparent sinkhole that had opened up near the overpass caused chunks of concrete to fall onto the freeway near Western Avenue, Sgt. Victor Jackson, spokesman for the Glendale Police Department.
The debris prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a Sigalert and block all southbound lanes around 6 p.m., CHP officer Elizabeth Kravig said. Traffic was diverted to Western Avenue, she said.
No cars were hit by the debris and no one was injured, Kravig said.
Kravig said CHP officers and Caltrans workers were still trying to assess the source of the debris, as it was unclear whether they fell from the overpass or fell from a hill. She had no estimate of when the southbound lanes of the freeway would reopen.
No debris was reported in the northbound lanes, Kravig added.
