A The New York City Police Chief will receive $ 774,193 after officials terminate his contract.
The Southampton Village Board of Directors voted 5-0 on July 20 to terminate Chief Constable Thomas Cummings’ contract, giving him payment once he leaves office on September 10. The amount, paid from the city’s employee benefits reserve fund, was calculated from unused vacation and sick days, according to a report obtained by Newsday through a request for public records.
“Going forward, our board will focus on reducing long-term debt and liabilities as we diligently search for the next chief of police. I wish Chief Cummings the best and thank him for his service, ”said Southampton Mayor Jesse Warren, who has clashed with Cummings since the 2019 municipal election.

Cummings, who joined the police in 1987 and became chief of police in 2011, has accumulated 686 unused sick days during his career. His payout is calculated at $ 1,095 per day with an additional daily pay of $ 23,000. His family will receive dental and medical benefits without premiums until his death.
Cummings’ contract technically ended on May 31, but it contained a clause that allowed it to extend it until the board votes not to renew it. If the board of directors terminated the contract in May, Cummings’ payment would have been $ 583,683.
In 2019, the police chief faced controversy for hiring his son, Thomas Cummings Jr., to an entry-level position as a police officer. The directors voted unanimously to approve the hiring of Cummings.
