Alitalia dies after 75 turbulent years and hands over to ITA
Alitalia, a unique symbol of Italian style and glamor brought down by economic mismanagement, will make its last flight on Thursday after 75 years, before handing over to its reduced successor Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA). The traditional choice of popes, prima donnas and the Italian political elite, Alitalia has been run by administrators appointed by the state since 2017 to avoid being liquidated. As was often the case during his lifetime, Alitalia’s last rites were surrounded by political strife, with the far-right opposition Brothers of Italy party accusing Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government of his demise.
