A tourist in Dandridge, Tennessee died after losing consciousness while snorkeling on the molasses reef off Key Largo on Friday afternoon, Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies said .
Robert Wayne Chambers, 49, was snorkeling with his family and others on an outing with the Sea Dwellers Dive Center when he allegedly shouted for help while in the water, according to MPs.
Chambers stopped breathing and passed out around 2:15 p.m. Friday when center staff brought him to the boat and began CPR.
According to lawmakers, a US Coast Guard boat brought Chambers ashore in the Port Largo neighborhood and he was taken to Tavernier Marine Hospital, where he died.
Foul gambling is not suspected and autopsy reports are pending, the sheriff’s office said.
Previous freediving deaths
Earlier in April, Aleksander Toverovsky of Hallandale Beach, 82, similarly died after asking for help and then losing consciousness while snorkeling on Molasses Reef with others during a Tropical Odyssey Commercial Dive Boat Rental Commercial Outlet.
In September 2020, a 63-year-old woman in Port Orange, Florida died while on a snorkeling trip with a dive boat crew off Key West.
