At 8:12 a.m. from the opening period, a pair of griffin penalties within 14 seconds of each other granted the Icehogs 1:36 of a 5 against 3. However, the Grand Rapids penalty game was held, keeping Rockford out of the table early. The two teams exchanged another penalty, but came empty -handed, coming out of the first frame knotted at zero.
At just 4:50 am in the second period, the icehogs struck the first when a gift to Center Ice allowed Rockford to skate in zone 2-sur 1 of griffins and Gavin Hayes took advantage of it.
