Countless homes were destroyed by the landslide and it is believed that many residents sleeping inside may have been buried under the rubble.

Vincent Pyati, president of the local community development association, said the number of casualties was unknown.

β€œThe landslide occurred around three o’clock last night and it appears that more than 100 houses were buried. We do not yet know how many people were in these houses,” he told AFP.

Emergency services were sent to the scene.
