It was a truly impressive drive from the British star who looked calm despite the Dutchman’s attempts to chase him down.

But his father Adam admitted he wasn’t always convinced his son would reach the top step of the F1 podium.

Asked if he thought Norris would ever win a Formula 1 race, he surprisingly replied to talkSPORT: “Probably not.

“I think other parents stick to that, but I didn’t even know if he was going to make it to F1. It’s a really difficult thing.”

“The first real goal is just to get into F1, then stay in F1, then win a race, then win the championship.”

And now Norris Sr believes a championship must be Lando and McLaren’s goal.

He added: “I think there is a real opportunity to win more this year. He had several seconds.

“And next year they’ll really have to go for the championship, I think. The team is doing really well.”

Asked if Norris himself had always been confident about his chances of glory, he added: “Yes, as long as the car is there, that’s the truth.

“McLaren has done a huge job. Zak Brown, who came in about five years ago to run McLaren, has gradually improved the team, improved the wind tunnel and improved the equipment they have.

Lewis Hamilton reveals he told Lando Norris to stay in Miami after his first Grand Prix win as F1 star delays flight to party

“He was super fast, he was the youngest karting world champion, before him it was Lewis Hamilton. He won every championship throughout and was very fast – but then you need the equipment and the team is coming through now and you are starting to see their true talent.

“He always had confidence in his ability to win and be as fast as anyone in the world just because if you go through his history, he won almost every championship.

“It’s been super natural but super hard.”

And even though he usually works hard, the 24-year-old definitely took a night off.

Several drivers, including Hamilton and his close friend Verstappen, told him to go out and party in Miami.

And McLaren’s CEO made this easier by delaying Norris’ return flight.
