The Lakers’ pursuit of Klay Thompson is largely made possible by LeBron James’ decision to take a pay cut and open up the mid-level exception. So it would make sense for LeBron to be at the forefront of his recruitment as well.
Although Thompson didn’t immediately decide on his next team at the start of free agency, LeBron received a phone call to introduce him to the Lakers, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
It would be business as usual for any star signing a free agent of Thompson’s caliber. The only notable part of this is that LeBron at least claimed he wasn’t involved in the Lakers’ coaching search, so participating in free agency presentations is a change.
Additionally, Woj also noted that the decision wouldn’t come Sunday and would likely continue Monday. The sign-and-trade aspect keeps the options open for the Mavericks and Clippers, though each signed late Sunday for Naji Marshall and Derrick Jones Jr., respectively.
But the options are getting a little dwindling at this point. Add to that the signing of Jonas Valančiūnas with the Wizards, and several of the options thought available to the MLE are being seized.
That only means one thing: scatter everyone to recruit Klay at this point. It’s not an all-or-nothing deal, but he doesn’t have much left if something is missing. So call Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and ask them to remember seeing Klay as a kid with Mychal in practice. Ask Shaq about cementing his legacy by playing in the purple and gold. Spit out all the overused clichés you need to make it land.
