A young girl was allegedly stabbed to death by her teenage sister in the Lake Macquarie region of New South Wales.
Emergency services rushed to a house in Thurston Street, Boolaroo, near Newcastle, at around 3.45pm on Monday following reports of a stabbing.
Paramedics treated a 10-year-old girl at the scene for multiple stab wounds, but she could not be resuscitated.
Police arrested a 17-year-old girl at the home and she was taken to the Belmont Police Station and is currently assisting in the investigation.
No charges have yet been filed.
The girl’s death shook the close-knit neighborhood.
Forensic scientists spent Monday evening examining the Boolaroo home when a 10-year-old girl was allegedly stabbed to death.
Dozens of police officers remained at the scene on Thurston Street on Monday evening.
The street was blocked off by police where a young girl was stabbed multiple times and died.
“It’s beyond words,” a neighbor who knew the girl’s family told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“We are in mourning.”
Another resident told the Newcastle Herald that no one expected something so horrible to happen in their neighborhood.
Others had no idea anything was wrong until several sirens sounded on the usually quiet street.
No further injuries have been reported and a crime scene has been established as the investigation continues, with most of the street cordoned off with police tape.
Thurston Street was expected to remain blocked until late at night.
Forensic scientists arrived at the home to examine and photograph the crime scene and collect possible evidence.

A number of police vehicles remained parked in the street as detectives came and went from the house.
The latest incident follows a spate of fatal knife attacks across New South Wales in recent weeks.

Forensic officers were seen photographing the crime scene inside the home Monday evening.
Detectives declared the house a crime scene and launched an urgent investigation into the girl’s death.
