Kylian Mbappe sent a farewell shot to Paris Saint-Germain after his exit, saying “they spoke to him with violence” when he decided not to stay.
The French striker’s highly anticipated move to Real Madrid on Monday evening was confirmed as he signed a five-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mbappe scored 256 goals during his seven years with Paris Saint-Germain, however, his final year at the club was not without controversy after being exiled from the first team last summer when he revealed that he would not sign a new contract. .
Missing the season-opening 0–0 draw against Lorient, Mbappe was quickly brought back into the fold by head coach Luis Enrique and scored 44 goals during the season.
But according to the 25-year-old, this whole episode meant that he left Paris on a sour note.
“They made me understand that I would not play for PSG… they spoke to me with violence,” Mbappé said after turning out for Euro 2024 with France.
“Without (PSG coach) Luis Enrique and (football advisor) Luis Campos, I wouldn’t have set foot on the pitch. They saved me. That’s the truth.
“Just playing was a great source of pride. But for sure next year I won’t be satisfied with a year like this.”
Speaking about his arrival at Real Madrid, Mbappé added: “It’s a huge pleasure, a dream come true. It’s very exciting.
“I’m very happy, relieved and extremely proud. This is the club I’ve always dreamed of being at, so I want to thank you.
“I’m very excited about going to this great club, the best in the world.
“I feel very humbled by this prospect and would like to thank everyone who sent me messages and everyone who contributed to this operation.”
Mbappe helped PSG win a tenth Ligue 1 title in 12 seasons last month, but his hopes of ending their spell with an elusive first Champions League crown evaporated in the semi-final defeat of the last month against Borussia Dortmund.
While leading Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title, Mbappe will now join La Liga champions and Champions League winners Real Madrid in the hope of contributing to their newfound success.
But his next task will be to win the first ever European Championship, his country having already won the World Cup with Les Bleus in 2018.
France begins its Euro 2024 campaign on Monday June 17 in Germany, where it faces Austria. They also face the Netherlands and Poland in their group.
