Kyle Walker reveals he questioned his move to Man City and called his father for advice on pre-season tour after £53m move from Tottenham

Kyle Walker has called his father and wondered if leaving Tottenham Hotspur was a “mistake” during his first pre-season with Manchester City.

The right-back moved from North London to Manchester in 2017 for a fee of £53million plus add-ons, marking one of the most expensive transfers in football.

Walker’s move to City has proven to be worth the risk

Since then, the Sheffield United academy graduate has won ten major trophies with City, including three Premier League titles and also from the 2021 Champions League final against Chelsea.

However, despite the success the 31-year-old enjoyed during his time at the Etihad, Walker’s start to life with City didn’t go as planned.

The defender spoke to the Telegraph ahead of this weekend’s title showdown between his side and second-placed Liverpool, and the England international decided to open up about how he settled into the Pep Guardiola’s team.

Before the start of the 2017/18 season, City traveled to Boston for the pre-season, and Walker admitted that was when he started to question his decision to leave the club. Spurs.

“I’ve told this story to very few people but we were in Boston my first preseason,” he began. “Keep in mind that Tottenham had finished above City in the previous two seasons.

“Anyway we did a practice session and the guys for some reason weren’t there and I called my dad and said, ‘Dad, I don’t know if I’ I made a mistake here’.”

Walker played for Spurs for just under eight years

Tottenham were on the verge of winning their first-ever Premier League title for two consecutive seasons before Walker left, but lost, first to Leicester City and then London rivals Chelsea.

But despite his ominous first impressions, fortunately for Walker, it wasn’t long before his anxieties about missing out on the chance to win trophies subsided and he realized he had made the right decision.

“But as soon as he got to the first game of the season, Brighton away, it was like it just clicked, ‘Okay, we’re going to win the Premier League’. And we destroyed it.

Walker was praised for his instant impact and attacking threat down the right flank at the AMEX

In Walker’s first season at the club, City won the league with 100 points, 19 ahead of second-placed Manchester United and, crucially, 23 more than his former club Spurs, who finished third.

It’s hard to imagine Walker questioning his decision to leave Spurs given what he and City have achieved since then.

And given that his current contract expires in 2024, Walker has plenty of time to keep adding to his long list of accomplishments and make even more of his incredible goal-line clearances.
