Kurt Cobain’s Daughter Shares Bittersweet Lesson About His Death

Frances Bean Cobain pays tribute to her father Kurt Cobain on the 30th anniversary of his death

Frances Bean Cobain it’s mourning what could have been.

The 31-year-old man, whose father Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994, when she was 20 months old – reflecting on the short time she spent with the Nirvana singer. In a heartbreaking message marking the 30th anniversary of his death, Frances wrote: “I wish I knew my father.”

“I wish I knew the cadence of his voice, how much he loved his coffee, or the feeling of being snuggled up after a bedtime story,” she shared in an April 5 Instagram post. “I always wondered if he would have caught tadpoles with me in the humid Washington summers, or if he smelled like Camel Lights and strawberry nesquik (his favorites, I was told).”

But despite her grief, the visual artist noted that Kurt “gave me a lesson about death that can only come through the LIVED experience of losing someone.”

“Over the last 30 years, my ideas about loss have continued to morph,” she said. “The greatest lesson learned from grief for almost as long as I have been conscious is that it serves a purpose. The duality of life and death, pain and joy, yin and yang , must exist side by side or neither. It would make no sense. It is the ephemeral nature of human existence that draws us into the depths of our most authentic lives.
