Previously province of Serbia, Kosovo declared independence in 2008 following a brutal civil war in the 1990s between the Serbs and the Albanians in the former Yugoslavia. Self -determination (VVL) was the first part to have served its four -year mandate to the government in the Pristina capital, after winning 50.3% of the votes in 2021.

Since 2021, Kurti has grown the community of ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo, which represents up to 50,000 people from the population of 1.6 million people from Kosovo, to accept the authority of Pretina. This included the closure of Serbian banks and parallel governance institutions in the enclave and forcing Serbs to put Kosovar license plates on their vehicles.
