KM Deeksha breaks women’s national 1,500m record in Los Angeles; Avinash Sable finishes 2nd in men’s 5000m – Firstpost

India’s KM Deeksha finished third in the women’s 1,500m event at the Sound Running Track Fest in Los Angeles on Saturday, breaking a national record, while long-distance runner Avinash Sable secured second place in the 5,000m male.

Deeksha covered the distance in a time of 4:04.78 in the final, breaking the record that previously belonged to Harmilan Bains. Bains had covered the distance with a time of 4:05.39 during the National Open Athletics Championships 2021 in Warangal.

The 25-year-old’s previous best effort was 4:06.07 which she recorded in the final of the 2023 Inter-State National Athletics Championships at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. Deeksha had beaten Bains for the gold medal in this event.

Deeksha, who hails from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, has been a part of MP Athletics Academy for five years under coach SK Prasad.

Sable finished second in the men’s 5000m with a time of 13:20.37 and not his favorite event the 3000m steeplechase, and in the same event Gulveer Singh ran a time of 13:31.95.

Sable’s 5,000m national record is 13:19.30.

Parul Chaudhary ran 15:10.69 in the women’s 5000m to finish fifth. Parul narrowly missed out on improving her national record while her compatriot Ankita finished 10th with a time of 15:28.88.

Kartik Kumar ran the final lap in 62 seconds in the men’s 10,000m, but that could only net him a second place. He clocked 28:07.66.

This is a bronze level event on the World Athletics Continental Tour.
