Ottawa, Ontario – King Charles III arrives in Ottawa on Monday, a visit that will underline Canada’s sovereignty to the American president Donald Trump.
Trump’s repeated suggestion that the United States Annex its northern neighbor I encouraged Prime Minister Mark Carney to invite Charles to give the Throne speech that will describe the agenda of his government for the new parliament.
The king is the Head of State in Canadawho is a member of the British Commonwealth of former colonies.
Carney and the first indigenous governor of Canada, Mary Simon, the king’s representative in Canada, will welcome King and Queen Camilla as well as the Honor of the Royal Canadian Dragons of 25 members, for which the king is chief colonel.
The presence of Charles and Camilla “at this pivotal moment in our history is of deep importance,” said Simon in a statement on Monday. “He reaffirms the sustainable constitutional link that shaped Canada’s trip to a proud and independent nation.”
“Their visit invites us to think about who we are and to celebrate our distinct national identity,” she added.
Carney declared in a press release that the visit speaks of the “vitality of our constitutional monarchy and our distinct identity”.
It is rare for the monarch to pronounce what is called the discourse of the throne in Canada. Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did it twice in her 70 -year reign, the last time in 1977.
Canadians are largely indifferent to the monarchy, but Carney is looking forward to showing the differences between Canada and the United States. The king’s visit clearly underlines Canada’s sovereignty, he said.
After America was independent of Great Britain, Canada remained a colony until 1867 and then continued as a constitutional monarchy with a British style parliamentary system.
“We are different,” said former Prime Minister of Quebec, Jean Charest. “If you look at why King Charles reads the discourse of the throne, then you must then recognize the history of Canada.”
However, the new American ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, said that sending messages was not necessary and that Canadians should go from the 51st state speech, saying to the Canadian radio company than if there is a message to send, there are easier ways to do so, as called or call the president.
Royal Historian Carolyn Harris expects Trump to notice the visit because he spoke several times about his admiration for the royal family. Trump could see how different Canada is from the United States
“It is a very distinctive story that goes back to the waves of the loyalists who settled here after the American revolution,” said Harris. “And we are going to see the king in a Canadian context, escorted by the Royal Canadian mounted police, surrounded by a Canadian symbolism. It is really King Charles III in his role as king of Canada. ”
The speech, which will be pronounced on Tuesday, is not written by the king or his British advisers because Charles is a non -partisan head of state. He will read what is subject to him by the Government of Canada.
“Charles can only act with consent and with the advice of his Prime Minister. But at the same time, he cannot act in a way that would throw one of the 14 other Commonwealth kingdoms under the bus. He is therefore a more beautiful rope to walk,” said Justin Vovk, a Canadian royal historian.
The Canadians were not satisfied when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended a state visit invitation to Trump on behalf of the King at a time when Trump threatened Canada’s sovereignty.
“They were not impressed by this gesture, given the circumstances,” Carney told Britain’s Sky News. “It was a time when we were quite clear … on problems related to sovereignty.”
The king recently showed support in Canada, including posting Canadian military medals on his chest during a visit to a British aircraft carrier.
After his arrival, Charles will abandon the first washer or ceremonial ball during a street hockey match. He will also attend a community event and will meet Carney. Camilla will also participate in a sworn ceremony to become a Canadian private advisor, a life meeting that allows her to give advice on the country to the king.
The king will return to the United Kingdom after Tuesday’s speech and a visit to the National Memorial of the Canada War.
