Kia Sorento driver says engine broke down while driving

There are many discussions online about car reliability. Often, brands like Toyota and Honda top the lists of cars that can be relied on to run for years and years.

However, one brand that is often mentioned for its reliability issues is Kia. Netizens have shared a multitude of issues with Kia vehicles, from a woman complaining that her newly purchased Kia just doesn’t work to their ease of theft, to a host of other issues.

Now, a user says her family’s Kia broke down while driving at 110 km/h (68 mph) – and it’s getting even worse.

A dangerous situation

According to TikTok user @croissantwoman in a video with more than 1.3 million views as of Saturday, her family was driving their 2014 Kia Sorento when it suddenly broke down.

“The engine stopped working and the car slowed down until it came to a complete stop in the middle of the road,” the TikToker explains. “We got out of the car safely, but it was an extremely dangerous situation.”

After the incident, @croissantwoman says they went to a Kia dealership, only to be shocked by a staff member’s lack of surprise at the problem.

“Yes, this model is just known for having engine issues,” the TikToker recalled telling the staffer. When asked why such issues wouldn’t warrant a recall, the TikToker continued to be shocked. The staff member reportedly responded: “Kia simply couldn’t spend the money to recall all the cars and change all the engines in the cars because it would just be too expensive.” »

“I was like, ‘Well, we could have died.’ We really could have died. We could have been rear-ended at 70 mph on the highway. The car stopped in the middle of the road. There’s nothing we can do,” the TikToker says. “And your excuse, or what you’re telling me right now, is, ‘Oh, we know we’re wrong, but it’s just too expensive to recall the cars and change all the engines.’”

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the TikToker says the dealership staff seemed to take the situation lightly, speaking down to them and even making jokes. The staff member also offered what they claimed was an “amazing deal” on a 2021 Kia for $25,800, which she found unacceptable given their recent experience.

“Actually, I said, if we spend $25,000, it’s not going to be a Kia after what you just told me, after what we just went through. It’s not a deal. We gain nothing from it,” shares the TikToker. She also claims that the oil was “just disappearing” in the car and the dealer’s solution was to simply top it up.

“What’s your excuse for that? What’s your excuse? The engine broke because the pipes were clogged. That’s why the oil was burning. There was no oxygen, but you know that,” the TikToker concludes.

Kia doesn’t know how to respond

In a follow-up video, the TikToker says she called Kia and informed them of her millions of TikTok followers. This apparently confused the customer service agent and was unable to confirm or deny the dealership’s claims.

However, he was later told that the car may have been subject to a recall, but they had not been informed of it. This was curious for the TikToker, because the car had already been the subject of two recalls. This idea was also complicated by other statements from the customer service agent, so the TikToker was unsure of the status of her vehicle.

Regardless, the TikToker describes the customer service employee as helpful and says the car will be towed for testing in the coming days.

In the comments section, users shared their own issues with Kia vehicles.

“I had a 2014 Kia Sorento. I had two engines that were recalled,” one user wrote. “Never buy a Kia again.”

“Basically, they calculated that there would be fewer lawsuits than recalls,” another suggested.

“I worked for a Lemon law firm in California and the Kias are horrible!” exclaimed a third.

“This just happened three days ago with our Kia Telluride,” another TikTok user said. “Our car suddenly slowed down on the highway at night with my two babies in the car. It’s so scary! »
