Keystone oil pipeline stopped after the “mechanical bang” reported

Keystone pipeline was closed after a “blow” was reported on Tuesday morning in the Northern Dakota, according to Bill Seess, head of the Department of Environmental Department of the Northern Dakota Environment Department.

“An employee of a pumping station heard what was described as a mechanical blow” at 7:44 am, told CBS News, adding that the employee immediately closed the pipeline and informed the emergency staff.

South Bow, a liquid pipeline company that has managed the pipeline since 2024, said the leak detection systems in the control center have detected pressure drop in the system. The company said that a closure and an answer had been launched around 7:42 a.m.

The affected segment has been isolated, South Bow said, and operations and confinement resources have been mobilized on the site. The breakup occurred in Milepost 171, near Fort Ransom, said South Bow.

Pipeline’s crude oil release was limited to an agricultural field south of the pumping station, said Suess. He told the Associated Press that the oil had been reported on a surface area 300 meters south of the pumping station. Emergency staff responded to the site, he said.

The Department of Environmental Quality of the North Dakota said in a statement that its staff responded to the spill and would supervise sanitation efforts. The cause of the rupture and the volume of crude oil overturned were not immediately available.

Suess declared to the AP that no person or structure was affected by the spill, and a nearby stream which flows only for a part of the year was not affected but was blocked and isolated as a precaution. South Bow said it was “notifications suitable for our regulators, landowners and customers”.

The pipeline, which has put itself online in 2011, transports crude oil from Canada to the United States. The pipeline crosses northern Dakota, southern Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri to reach refineries in Illinois and Oklahoma. An extension offered to the pipeline that would have transported crude oil to refineries on the Gulf coast was Stop in 2021 After years of protests.

The pipeline had At least three important spills Since 2017, CBS News has previously reported. The largest spill was in 2022, when about 14,000 barrels of crude oil Overturned in a kansas stream.
