Kevin Durant, LeBron James and company begin Team USA’s quest for FIFTH straight Olympic gold medal with easy win over Nikola Jokic and Team Serbia

  • Kevin Durant was a question mark to play but produced a virtuoso performance
  • LeBron James also flirted with a triple-double on an impressive afternoon

Kevin Durant made a stunning comeback from injury and LeBron James led the way as the United States men’s basketball team comfortably beat Serbia 110-84 in its Olympic opener.

Durant had missed all of the Americans’ warm-up games before Paris with a calf injury and was in a race against time to be healthy enough for Sunday.

But the Suns star was deemed available shortly before the game and had an absolutely flawless first half after coming off the bench, scoring 21 points on 8-of-8 shooting.

He would only score two more in the second half, but that would not matter as the United States would continue to build on their nine-point halftime lead, with James also contributing an impressive 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic scored 20 points, had eight assists and grabbed five rebounds for Serbia, but his team was ultimately overwhelmed by a star-studded U.S. team.

Hawks guard Bogdan Bogdanovic added 14 points for Serbia in the loss while Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday, Stephen Curry and Anthony Edwards all also finished in double figures.

The United States started the game slowly, with Serbia quickly taking a 10-2 lead and forcing U.S. coach Steve Kerr to call a timeout.

However, the introduction of big man Anthony Davis in place of Joel Embiid coincided with an extended 12-2 run and the United States took control of the game when Durant entered late in the first half.

The U.S. team will face South Sudan on Wednesday.
