Kevin Costner’s Horizon 2 pulled from theaters after initial box office failure

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga was supposed to get a sequel next month, but it has now been pulled from the schedule.

In a statement sent to VarietyTerritory Pictures and New Line Cinema have confirmed that Horizon: An America Saga – Chapter 2 will not be released on its promised August 16 release date. This blow to Costner’s western series follows the theatrical release of the first chapter on June 28, 2024.

This is an indefinite delay for the sequel, but not an outright cancellation. Horizon: Chapter 1, meanwhile, is set to hit PVOD on July 16, with a Max release date yet to be announced.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 has been pulled from its August release date.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a better opportunity to experience the first Horizon installment in the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max,” a New Line Cinema spokesperson said. “We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the United States experience the film in theaters.”

Costner directed and starred in the Horizon series. The first installment reportedly cost $100 million to produce, but only managed to gross $11 million in its opening weekend. The star, who is best known for starring in films like Dances with Wolves, Man of Steel and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, said GQ In May, he said he had personally invested “about $38 million in the film.” Both chapters got their release dates late last year.

According to Variety’s sources, Horizon: Chapter 1 has been a consistent hit with older audiences in the American heartland. The decision to re-evaluate Chapter 2’s release date was made by mutual consent in hopes of generating interest and potentially releasing more chapters in the series down the road.

“The audience response to Horizon and the excitement to see our story continue in Horizon 2 has been incredibly rewarding,” Territory said in a statement. “Kevin made this film for people who love movies and wanted to take a journey. The support we’ve received from moviegoers and theater owners as they experience the first chapter of this saga only strengthens our belief in them and our films, and we thank them for joining us on this journey. We welcome the opportunity to expand this window, as we know it will only serve to enhance the viewing experience of Horizon 2.”

We weren’t in love with Horizon: Chapter 1. In our Review 4/10We said: “The first chapter of Kevin Costner’s epic Western series is a meandering, regressive slumber.” No further release plans for Chapter 2 have been announced at this time.
