Kentucky Bourbon Makers upset by Canada shooting bottles off the shelves

  • Kentucky bourbon manufacturers are not satisfied with Canada’s response to 25% Trump prices.
  • Some provinces have removed American manufacturing alcohol from the shelves from their stores and have stopped buying new products.
  • The Kentucky Distillers Association has said that Canada’s measures will have “consequences of a large range”.

Bourbon manufacturers in Kentucky are unhappy from Canada, which buys millions of dollars of state whiskey per year.

In the days which followed the entry into force of Trump’s prices, several Canadian provinces fired alcohol made in the United States from store shelves. And any American alcohol they buy could become more expensive: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that he would impose Debate 25% prices Out of $ 155 billion in American products.

Eric Gregory, the president of Kentucky Distillers’ Association, said in a Tuesday press release on X that the reprisal rates would have “consequences of a large range through Kentucky, which houses 95% of world bourbon”.

Canada’s reprisal measures “will have endangered for years,” he said.

Gregory’s statement comes as several Canadian provinces have tightened alcohol in the United States this week. Provinces such as Ontario and New Brunswick have asked the state-affiliated alcohol retailers, who regulate the sale and distribution of alcohol in their regions, to draw American products from their shelves.

The Ontario government has asked Ontario’s alcohol control council to “immediately” cease imports of American alcohol and stop selling American products, the LCBO announced on Tuesday.

The government of New Brunswick said on Facebook on Wednesday that it would not buy new American alcohol products. The government said it had removed alcohol products made by the United States from NB alcohol shelves, a government-affiliated alcohol retailer.

Quebec has followed suit. The Société des alcools du Québec, an alcohol retailer managed by the government, said in a post on Wednesday X that he wiped all American branches and his website “at the request of the Quebec government”.

Before the start of the trade war, Canada was a big importer of spirits made in Kentucky.

The agricultural trade of Canada-Kentucky totaled $ 691 million in 2023, Kentucky exporting $ 43 million in whiskey in Canada that year, the Canadian government said on its official website.

And Kentucky imported $ 40.3 million in Canada whiskey.

Paul Cools, professor of economics at the University of Louisville, wrote in a 2023 report that Canada was the largest importer of the spirits made in Kentucky in 2022.

It was not only the manufacturers of Bourbon of Kentucky who deplored the reprisal measures of Canada.

Lawson Whiting, CEO of Brown-Forman, Jack Daniel’s’s parent company, said in a call for results on Wednesday that reprisals was “worse than a price” and a “disproportionate response” at Trump prices.

In June, the company said in its annual report that Canada represented 1% of the total sales, while 45% came from the United States.

Trump said in early February that he would impose 25% Prices on Mexico and Canada. These prices were delayed by one month after the two countries promised to tighten their border security, but entered into force on Tuesday.

The representatives of Kentucky Distillers’ Association did not respond to a request for comments from Business Insider, sent outside regular working hours.
