Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel, said that the global commercial struggle of President Donald Trump was likely to spoil the reputation of the country and its government bond market.
“The United States was more than a simple nation … It is a universal brand. Whether it was our culture, our financial strength, our military force, America exceeded the simple country,” Griffin told Semaor in global economy in Washington, DC. “It was like an aspiration for most of the world, and we are eroding this brand at the moment.”
Trump deployment of the highest prices on generation imports shocked the world earlier this month, triggering extreme volatility to Wall Street. A few days later, the president announced a sudden break of 90 days over a large part of the increase, with the exception of China, while the White House sought to conclude agreements with the countries.
In response to political tensions, treasury yields have increased and the dollar has weakened in its global counterparts in a sign that investors are moving away from the United States as the safest place to invest.
“In the financial markets, no brand compared to the brand of the US Treasury market, the strength of the US dollar. Force, the dedigne of the American Treasurys, no brand has come closer. We are putting this brand in danger,” said Griffin.
Griffin, whose hedge fund had more than $ 65 billion in assets under management at the beginning of 2025, voted for Trump and was megadoneur of republican politicians. However, he was very critical with regard to Trump’s trade policy, describing the rhetoric of the president of “bombing”.
“The President and the Secretary of the Treasury and the Secretary of Commerce must be very thoughtful when you have a brand, you must behave in a way that respects this brand, which strengthens this brand because when you tarnish this brand, it can be a life to repair the damage caused,” said Griffin.
