Kelly Rowland explains viral run-in with Cannes red carpet security

Kelly Rowland is speaking out following a heated exchange with security on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday.

After footage of the Destiny’s Child alum speaking sternly to a security guard on the Marcello Mio The red carpet premiere made waves online, she explained the incident in an interview with Associated Press at the amfAR gala in Cannes, France on Thursday (May 23).

“The woman knows what happened. I know what happened,” Rowland, 43, told the outlet. “I have a limit, and I respect it, and that’s it.”

“And there were other women who were on that mat who didn’t really look like me, and they weren’t scolded or pushed away or asked to get off,” she added. “I held on, and she felt like she had to hold on, but I held on.”

PEOPLE has contacted the Cannes Film Festival for comment.

The incident occurred on the staircase of the Palais des Festivals, where Rowland and the security guard had an exchange. Several people accompanying the “Dilemma” singer appeared to interfere, but the guard continued to move them along the mat.

Earlier this year, Rowland starred in her own film: Tyler Perry’s. Mea culpa. When it released on Netflix in February, she told PEOPLE that starring in the erotic legal thriller “was quite an experience.”

“I remember being very nervous when I read the script and I remember thinking about everything that an erotic thriller has and it made me very intimidated,” she said at the time. “And then I had a friend of mine call me and he said, ‘You know, Kel, if it doesn’t scare you, what’s the point of doing it?'”

“And so I literally ran up to him. I took it all in. Tyler was so amazing and instrumental in this whole process and (my teammate) Trevante (Rhodes) was just a pleasure to work with. I was very lucky,” Rowland added.
