Kellen Moore set to interview for vacant Cowboys head coaching job

FRISCO, TX – A very familiar face was added to the mix, as expected, as the Dallas Cowboys quickly cast a wide net over candidates to determine who they want to become Mike McCarthy’s successor and the franchise’s next head coach – Kellen Moore garnering more than just interest from the club.

He was informed that the Cowboys sent a request to the Eagles to speak with him about the vacant head coaching position in Dallas, a request the Eagles cannot refuse as it is tied to a possible promotion from his current role as offensive coordinator in Philadelphia.

As such, Moore is expected to interview for the position as early as this week.

Moore is one of 20 candidates listed who were/are likely to receive a call from the Dallas front office, and several high-profile names are already starting to appear on that list – one that includes a former Cowboys player and a member of the Hall of Fame. Deion Sanders – with Robert Saleh for an interview on Saturday and on Monday there will be a meeting with Leslie Frazier.

Sanders and Moore obviously have relationships with the Cowboys, but Moore’s are very different than Sanders’.

Much like Jason Garrett’s development from backup quarterback to offensive coordinator to assistant head coach to interim head coach to full-time head coach, all with the Cowboys, a lot of time and resources were devoted to making Moore what he became. Today.

This was demonstrated by Moore rising from the ranks of backup QB to offensive coordinator in a short period of time, retiring as a player in 2018 and being named OC in 2019.

He only recently parted ways with Dallas – after the 2022 season – due to schematic differences with McCarthy, who later took over playcalling duties. Moore was poised to one day complete his Garrett-like arc atop the coaching totem pole in Dallas, and the Cowboys see this as an opportunity to potentially make that a reality.

His stint with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023 was short-lived and he’d probably like to forget it, but he had significantly more success with an Eagles team that features Saquon Barkley, playing at an MVP level, and one of the best offensive lines in all of football, to accompany Jalen Hurts and receive weapons such as AJ Brown, Dallas Goedert and DeVonta Smith.

There are certainly some fundamental offensive weapons in Dallas as well, as Moore knows all too well, having already established a deep relationship with All-Pro quarterback Dak Prescott and All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, as well as his familiarity with the Pro Bowl tight end practice. finish Jake Ferguson and other players on that side of the ball who are guaranteed to wear the uniform in 2025.

The Cowboys need to do more due diligence in the search for the franchise’s next head coach, but Moore should be a favorite to land the job.
