China’s problem
But Starmer reviews – including those of the Trump administration itself – have a ready -to -use counter.
The mission of clean energy, they say, means that Great Britain sleeps in dependence on new energy hegemony-China, a country that dominates supply chains for renewable energies and electric vehicles required by the United Kingdom and others if they want to wean their savings in fossil fuels.
It was a point supported by Trump’s envoy at the London summit, Tommy Joyce, acting deputy secretary of international affairs in the American energy department. “There are no uncompromising or coercion wind turbines from China,” he told delegates.
This is a weak point of the proper energy plan of the work to which the government seems sensitive. This week, Miliband bowed against the pressure of the rival parties and his own anemia when he promised to modify the legislation so that the new electricity company belonging to the State, GB Energy, less exposed to the workforce of slaves in the supply chains of solar panels. It was a measure targeting Chinese production, which was linked to forced work in the Xinjiang region.
Political competitors spy on an opportunity. Andrew Bowie, the acting secretary of the conservative energy, wrote this week that the “ideological pursuit of Net Zero” led the United Kingdom “in the arms of China”.
Bowie did not limit her arguments to solar energy. “This is not a single site, a sector or an agreement. It is a model,” he wrote. “Overall, the Net Zero zero has opened the door to greater Chinese involvement in our energy infrastructure.”
Miliband, for his part, recognizes the risks of “concentration” of clean energy supply chains, and the retorts that invest at home are the answer. The reduction in dependence on China “begins by taking a appropriate industrial policy seriously where you are starting to build it in Great Britain,” he told Politico at the London summit.
The challenge for the United Kingdom, a medium-sized economy that talks about its global green influence, is whether it can really shake up the demands of dependence on Chinese superpower. Failure to do this, and political rhetoric on patriotic clean energy will only fall flat.
