Katy Perry announced Monday that she is leaving “American Idol” after seven seasons.

“This fall, in September, I’m going to do a huge music festival in Brazil called Rock in Rio…so I think it’ll probably be my last season of ‘Idol,'” Perry said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in front of a shocked audience.

“I mean, I love ‘Idol’ so much,” she continued. “It connected me to the heart of America, but I need to feel the pulse of my own rhythm.”

The “Last Friday Night” singer, 39, appeared on the late-night show to promote the upcoming 22nd season of the singing competition series.

Perry joined the panel of judges for the show’s 16th season in March 2018 when ABC revived it after a year-long stint on Fox.

The “Never Really Over” singer has worked alongside fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie since joining.

When host Kimmel, 56, asked, “What did Luke and Lionel say” about her departure, Perry replied, “Well, they’ll find out tonight! »

Perry’s participation on “Idol” was not without controversy. The pop star actually took a break from the show last year after fan outcry over her harsh criticism of the contestants.

She was initially criticized for joking that contestant Sara Beth Liebe “lay down too much on the table” upon learning that the young singer already had three children.

She suggested that her co-judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, would find out about her departure while watching the late-night show. ABC

“It was embarrassing to have that on TV, and it was hurtful,” Liebe, who eventually left “Idol” to care for her children, said in a TikTok video after her viral episode aired early 2023.

“I think women supporting and uplifting other women are so cool and I think mom shaming is super lame and I think it’s hard enough being a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman.”

The “I Kissed a Girl” singer was also booed for criticizing another contestant’s sequinned costume.

Perry was repeatedly criticized during her tenure on “Idol” as viewers found she was “bullying” contestants. ABC

Although Perry didn’t address the issue of the hot water she frequently found herself in, fellow judge Bryan jumped to her defense.

“Katy gets criticized for going out and trying to have fun doing a TV show,” Bryan, 47, said at the Country Music Association Fest in June 2023.

“You can’t be that safe in a moment where you’re so homogenized, you can never joke or have a fun time.”
