For the first time, two dominant female boxers will headline New York’s Madison Square Garden. Katie Taylor will officially defend her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring lightweight titles against Amanda Serrano on April 30, promoters announced Thursday.

This is a collaborative effort with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions. Tickets for the fight will go on sale on February 4, while the pre-sale will take place on February 3. Tickets start at $56.

“From the moment Katie Taylor walked into my office, it was the moment we’ve always dreamed of,” Hearn said. “The moment the world would stop and stare and watch the two greatest female fighters on the planet headline in boxing’s Mecca, Madison Square Garden. Taylor vs. Serrano is a fight for the history books. Yes, it’s by far the greatest women’s fight of all time, but it’s also one of the greatest fights of all time, the undisputed world and Olympic champion against the seven-division world champion.

“Both fighters deserve credit for putting on this fight, as does Jake Paul and his team at Most Valuable Promotions, DAZN and Madison Square Garden – together we’ll put on a special night in New York and put on a proper show for these pioneers to shine.

Olympic gold medalist in 2012, Taylor made her professional debut in 2016 and won the WBA lightweight title in 2017. She went on to beat Victoria Bustos in 2018 for the IBF title, Rose Volate for the WBO title and Delfine Persoon in 2019 for the WBC and The Ring titles. Taylor has won three fights in 2021. Her last fight was a unanimous decision win over Firuza Sharipova in December.

“This is a fight that I’ve wanted for a long, long time and I’m just excited that it’s finally happening because these are the kinds of fights I’m in the sport for,” Taylor said. “People have been talking about this fight for years and there were times when I wondered if this was ever going to happen, so I’m so grateful to Eddie Hearn, everyone at Matchroom, DAZN and Madison Square Garden for got him over the line.”

Serrano is a seven-division world champion, having held gold in the super featherweight, junior featherweight, featherweight, lightweight, bantamweight, light welterweight and junior bantamweight divisions. Serrano is on a 28-fight winning streak since suffering the only loss of her career in 2012. Her last fight was in December, a unanimous decision victory over Miriam Gutierrez, a former opponent of Taylor.

“It’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to headline Madison Square Garden and do it against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Katie Taylor,” Serrano said. “Ever since I was little, my only boyfriend has been boxing. I’ve dedicated my life to him, and this event makes that commitment worth every minute. On April 30, I’m going to make history for myself, for my team, for my family, for Puerto Rico, for every Latina and Latino, and for all the women in the world.

The fight is finally back after the two were going to face off in 2020 at a Matchroom Fight Camp event. COVID-19 altered those plans, in addition to a rebooking due to Serrano filming a Telemundo show. Hearn threatened legal action due to the conflicting timing of the two events. There was also some debate over what the fight pay would be.

After months of negotiations, the game is over. When Serrano beat Heather Hardy in 2019, Hearn said a fight between her and Taylor could very well be MSG’s main event, not the Hulu theater.

Serrano teamed up with Paul and Most Valuable Promotions and became a big part of his fight cards. Paul said he would take a break from boxing to focus on this match.

“We are honored to be a part of this historic event, headlined by two historically dominant women. Bringing attention to women’s boxing has been a priority for us and Saturday April 30 is a milestone not just for the sport, but also for girls around the world who deserve equal opportunities,” said Paul and Nakisa Bidarian. “We expect a battle for the ages and have the utmost respect and admiration for Katie Taylor. But make no mistake, we stand by Amanda Serrano and know she will prove to the world that she’s the pound-for-pound greatest female boxer to ever step into the ring. It’s more than a fight, it’s forever.
