Kamala Harris backtracks on promise to ban plastic straws
Campaign members say presidential candidate Kamala Harris has backtracked on her 2019 promise to ban plastic straws to combat climate change.
In 2019, during a CNN town hall, Kamala Harris said America should ban plastic straws to combat the climate crisis, while acknowledging that it could be difficult to drink from paper straws.
“Innovation is a process. But we have to encourage innovation. I think we can do better than these flimsy plastic straws,” she said. “We have to ban plastic.”
According to a report from Axios’ Alex Thompson published Thursday, the Kamala Harris campaign said that was “no longer her position.”
“Banning plastic straws to protect the environment and marine life is the latest progressive issue on which Harris and her campaign have declined to comment or changed positions,” the report notes.
““Many parts of the country have banned plastic straws as concerns about plastic pollution in oceans and waterways have grown,” he added.
Reached for comment, the Harris campaign said: “She does not support banning plastic straws.”
“She voted for the most significant legislation in history to fight climate change and create clean energy jobs. As president, she will focus on building on that progress,” the statement added. “She joked back then about the quality of paper straws and the need to find better, greener alternatives.”
The revelation of her alleged U-turn on banning plastic straws comes a week after she backtracked on her previous call to ban fracking.
“I definitely support banning fracking,” Harris said during the 2020 primary. “And that starts with what we can do on day one around public lands. It takes legislation. Yes. It’s something I’ve done in California. I’m used to working on this issue… We just have to recognize that the residual impact of fracking is enormous in terms of the impact on the health and safety of communities.”
When confronted by Dana Bash about her past statements, Harris said she never committed to banning fracking.
“I made that clear in the 2020 debate,” she said. “I would not ban fracking. As vice president, I did not ban fracking. As president, I will not ban fracking.”
