VALDOSTA, Ga. — Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), President Donald Trump’s former running mate, exclusively told Breitbart News that last month’s “downgrade” of nearly 1 million jobs over the past year by Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s administration is the “worst” since the immediate aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.
“The worst downgrade in 15 years, and if you do your math, that’s 2009 and what was 2009? Is that right? It was the financial crisis of 2008 that changed the numbers in 2009,” Vance told Breitbart News in an interview at the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office in late August.
The Labor Department announced in late August that it was revising its employment numbers from spring 2023 to spring 2024 downward by 818,000 jobs. This significant downward revision seriously contradicts the Democrats’ message that Biden and Harris were somehow economic saviors, and some senior administration officials, such as Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in an interview at the Democratic National Convention, have tried to downplay the significance of the report.
But Vance said the Democrats’ message on the economy is a flat-out lie.
“They’re actively lying — at least they were — six weeks ago, remember their argument was, ‘Joe Biden’s economy is really good, that’s why you should re-elect Joe Biden,’” Vance told Breitbart News. “Now their argument is that the economy is terrible and Kamala Harris is the agent of change. Kamala Harris is not the agent of change — she’s been vice president for three and a half years. It’s fascinating how quickly they can go from the economy being healthy to the economy being in trouble, which suggests that they recognize that their message that the economy is good wasn’t working.”
However, Vance believes the public can see through the misinformation from Harris and her allies like Biden.
“The fact that we have to revise down the number of 900,000 jobs created last year suggests that Americans don’t believe these false statistics,” Vance said. “Americans believe what they see and they see rising prices. It’s harder to find a middle-class job and send your kids to a good school. All of that has gone in the wrong direction because of Kamala Harris and that’s why we need to re-elect Donald Trump.”
Vance’s comments on the matter come as Biden, fresh from a beach vacation in Delaware, is set to join Harris on the campaign trail as she tries to recalibrate her appeal to working- and middle-class voters this Labor Day.
