Kalani David, professional surfer and skateboarder, dies after a seizure while surfing

He was 24 years old.

Kalani David was accomplished in both sports, having competed around the world in both disciplines. His X Games profile highlights his multi-sport talents from an early age: “(David) grew up surfing and skateboarding, so he could be considered a seasoned veteran at the ripe old age of 14,” says- he.

At the age of 14, David won team gold and individual gold at the 2012 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Panama.

His Instagram page is full of videos and photos of him surfing, skating and fishing.
Famous surfer Kelly Slater posted photos of a young Kalani with the 11-time world champion on Instagram and said: “Kalani was one of the most talented surfers/skateboarders on Earth of all time, constantly pushing back the odds. limits every time he was up…Condolences to the huge community of friends Kalani had from coast to coast and across the globe.”

According to a 2019 Men’s Journal article, David underwent surgery to help correct a rare heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. The open-heart procedure was performed to help reduce the seizures he had suffered, according to the article.

In June, David posted a photo of himself to the tube and wrote, “With these seizures my neurologist told me not to drive and surf until I stop having them. I mean I could surf but, if I were to have one and not If I’m not saved in time, I’ll die or become a vegetable because I don’t have enough air for my brain.

“I continue to be lucky, I had one seizure while driving and the other in the water within a few months. For the past two years I have had sleeping seizures and just angels watching over me because i don’t know how i keep being so lucky and living through all of this it’s time to put all this in order so i can move on in life, at least i can skate and fish!”

In his last Instagram post three weeks ago, David shared a video of himself skateboarding, performing various tricks while getting in and out of a bowl.

CNN contacted Costa Rican authorities but did not hear back.
