Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers for season 2, episode 2 of “The Last of Us” by HBO, now in difficulty on Max.
Kaitlyn Dever revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she had started filming her role as Abby in season 2 of “The Last of Us” only three days after her mother’s funeral. To make things even more intense, the first sequences that Dever turned for the show was abby torturing to death Joel de Pedro Pascal.
“It was just an emotionally massive scene, and with the blockage too,” said Dever. “There were so many mobile pieces and so many things to sail … To be as honest as possible, I will simply say that my days before this scene were horrible.”
The mother of Dever received a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer at 39 and fought against 14 years. She died in February 2024, just a few weeks before Dever started production on “The Last of Us”.
“I lost my mother two or three weeks before shooting this scene (on” The Last of Us “),” said Dever by discussing the murder of Abby de Joel. “My mother’s funeral had three days before doing my first day. So I was in a way in a fog. I was in a stunning. “
The creative team of “The Last of Us” has done everything in their power to ensure the comfort of becoming on the set, including the revision of the filming calendar so that the scene can start filming with cover plans which did not require that Dever is so shortly after the funeral of its mother. According to EW: “(Dever) then chose the day she felt likely to film Abby’s big scene with Joel. The shooting was a closed set to limit the number of passers -by to the necessary people.”
“We said,” Take your time. Take all the time you need, “said the co-creator of the series, Craig Mazin. “Although I care extraordinarily about the show, it’s a television program. I will not disturb someone’s mourning process for their own parents, in particular (with) a program that partly concerns the mourning process.”
Dever added: “Because of my life circumstances, I couldn’t really do my normal routine as an actor, which was really interesting because I was a little worried. anyway.”
Joel’s shocking murder was straight out of video games “The Last of Us Part II”. Abby de Dever is in Joel hostage and reveals that she is the doctor’s daughter he pulled in the head to save Ellie. She then shoots Joel with her leg and the baton with a golf club. After having passed his fists and beating him, Abby gives the fatal blow by a peak in the neck of Joel.
Pascal told HBO that “meeting Kaitlyn was incredible” and “it is ironic that something so violent and tragic between the characters can immediately link you to the actor”. After the broadcast of the episode, he shared a selfie he took with Dever during the shooting of the episode.
