Jurgen Klopp has revealed he will vote to scrap the use of VAR in the Premier League and claimed officials ‘can’t use it properly’.

It emerged on Wednesday that all 20 clubs would vote on a proposal made by Wolves to scrap VAR, the controversial system first introduced in 2019.

And the Liverpool boss, speaking at his final pre-match press conference on Friday morning, claimed he would vote to get rid of the technology.

He said: “The way it is being used is definitely not correct. How they use it I would downvote. These people can’t do it right.

“VAR is not the problem, you can’t change people, so I would vote for removing VAR.”

On Wednesday evening, the chances of the controversial system, first used in the top flight in 2019, being scrapped from next season were described as “unlikely”, with 14 of the 20 clubs required to vote in favor when of their annual general meeting. Harrogate June 6.

Premier League sources said they would oppose the motion and added they were confident they had enough votes to block it.

They will highlight statistics which show an increase in correct decisions from 82 per cent to 96 per cent since the introduction of VAR, and urge clubs to focus on improvements which should speed up decision-making. For example, semi-automated offside calls are being introduced.

Mail Sport has also learned that a number of clubs believe the elite will expand its referee pool to allow Europe’s elite officials to take charge of matches.

Even if the decision to abandon VAR risks ending in failure when the clubs vote at the annual general meeting at the end of the season, it is clear that the teams want firm commitments from the Premier League with a view to improving the system and its processes.

The fact that a large number of Premier League clubs play in European competitions and will use VAR next season, the decision-making inconsistencies players will face from week to week are among the apprehensions about abandoning the system altogether .

Among the criticisms VAR has faced is the lack of clarity of arrangements for spectators in the stadium.

A number of mitigating factors mean Wolves' radical proposal is likely to fail at the AGM.

While viewers on television participate in the decision-making process, those on the ground are largely unaware of how VAR officials make their decisions.

And the Premier League is set to give the green light to in-stadium VAR communication, which it is hoped will go some way to improving the experience for those watching from the stands.

At last summer’s Women’s World Cup, officials were allowed to announce VAR decisions, via microphone, to fans in stadiums for the first time at a senior FIFA international tournament.

And the Premier League acknowledges that the same procedures should be introduced in England’s top division, although it remains to be seen whether this feature can be implemented in time for next season.
