Klopp got the crowd to serenade his successor

In his farewell speech, he managed to get a packed Anfield chanting: “La la la la la, Arne Slot!”

The Feyenoord boss was chosen to succeed Klopp as manager at Liverpool as there were emotional scenes at Anfield as fans bid farewell to Klopp, starting well before kick-off, while that his players were visibly upset after the match.

Jurgen Klopp fought back tears and had to end his interview with Sir Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness after Liverpool’s Premier League title win

That included Van Dijk, who had to hold back tears after kissing his manager on the pitch moments after the final whistle.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold was seen with tears in his eyes after the speeches as Liverpool players and staff sang You’ll Never Walk Alone together in front of the Kop.

Klopp spent the last nine years at Liverpool where he won everything he could, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

There have been players with him through thick and thin, including Van Dijk, who he signed in January 2018 for £75 million from Southampton.

The Dutchman has proven to be a transformative signing for the Reds, propelling them to great success in Europe and the Premier League.

And the 32-year-old will undoubtedly go down as one of the best defenders of his generation and he owes much of his career to Klopp for helping him reach such heights.

He is not the only one, Liverpool’s players are now full of stars who will enter the club’s folklore, notably Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Lexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson and Alisson, all of whom have become key players under Klopp.

The German manager was serenaded with his song after entering the field to deliver his farewell speech.

Addressing adoring fans on the Anfield pitch, Klopp said: “I’m surprised. I thought I would be in pieces already but that’s not the case. I’m so happy for all of you, for the atmosphere, the game, for being a part of this family and of us, how we celebrate this day, thank you very much!

“One of the Manchester City draws we drew… That would have helped, eh?

“Thank you for ignoring my request not to sing my song for six weeks!”
