The press is understandably focused on the horrific shootings at a July 4 parade in Highland Park, Illinois, which left seven people dead and more than 30 injured. Police arrested 21-year-old Robert E. Crimo III, and Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said Tuesday authorities believe he had been planning the shooting for weeks. The alleged shooter fits the profile of many of these culprits: lonely young men who offered clues about their future killings on social media.
Illinois happens to have some of the strictest gun restrictions in the United States, and a separate Highland Park ordinance also restricts AR-15s, AK-47s, and other semi-automatic weapons. . Mr. Covelli said Tuesday that authorities believe Mr. Crimo obtained his guns legally in the state.
