Juan Soto and Mookie Betts are MVP favorites to start 2024
Shohei Ohtani (on track for an unheard of 111 extra-base hits) was simply magnificent. And one scout — who noticed his power is greater than ever, especially in center field — suggests that perhaps a break in throwing could be to blame.
It says here that Mookie Betts is still MVP, as he plays adequate shortstop and puts up offensive numbers second only to Ohtani. Imagine, someone else gets the nod because they are more versatile, at least for this year.
Juan Soto is the favorite for the AL MVP. Interesting fact heard: He turned down seven contract offers before becoming a Yankee.
It was a suggestion from JD Martinez that helped get Mets slugger Pete Alonso back on track.
Justin Verlander’s rough start Tuesday against the Yankees could be even better for the Mets, who will be on the hook for $17 million next year, plus $18.7 million in taxes if Verlander reaches 150 innings.
All of the Astros’ true starters except Ronel Blanco and Hunter Brown have already dealt with injuries, which could mean their seven straight seasons in the ALCS are catching up to them. And by the way, Brown (8.89 ERA) should have been demoted by now if he wasn’t absolutely necessary.
The Yankees, with their second-best team ERA of 2.96, will be careful with ace Gerrit Cole. He could return before June 20, but that now seems a reasonable guess.
Blake Snell has a rehab start scheduled for Sunday, and he could be back soon after.
