Josh Gad had to put on a show for a comedy legend…revealing he ran Mel Brooks through the recent “Star Wars” sequels while also offering a “Spaceballs” sequel.
The actor told this story in a recent episode of “Let’s talk off camera” podcast, hosted by Kelly Ripa …explaining that Mel is very involved in a “Spaceballs” sequel.
Gad says that when they presented their original concept, Mel told them he needed them to explain the newer films…and asked Gad not to go into any detail.
JG says he then launched into a 40 minute explanation…comparing himself to a combat veteran going to war in front of one person – sweating profusely, nailing every line and beat and explaining every comedic element.
Gad says that when he finished, Mel told him that “you really look like you have your finger on the pulse!”…a compliment Josh says is the best he’s ever received.
News that Gad was producing, writing and starring in the “Spaceballs” sequel was announced earlier this year…and Gad confirmed in November that they had already completed a first draft of the script.
If you don’t know… the original “Spaceballs” was released in 1987 and parodied the “Star Wars” universe. He played Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Jean Bonbon, Rick Moranis and Brooks himself. .

Looks like the new sequel has Brooks’ blessing…and, with Gad’s performance, he already has a glimpse of what it could look like!
