San Jose – Like never.
The earthquakes of San Jose, in their 30th year of existence, beat DC United, also in its 30th year, 6-1 Saturday at Paypal Park in San Jose.
Chisho Arango, Josef Martinez, Cristian Espinoza and Amahl Pellegrino scored the goals for earthquakes while Major League Soccer celebrated its 30th year with a birthday match. The two teams previously challenged the very first MLS match at Spartan Stadium on April 9, 1996, exactly 29 years ago.
The San Jose clash won 1-0 that day, obtaining a late goal from Eric Wynalda to seal the DC visitors. On Sunday, Martinez easily exceeded all the players combined in this 1996 match, scoring an early goal and two late to seal the competition.
Christian Benteke scored the only goal of DC United in the first half. Earthquakes have improved at 4-3-1 this season, while DC fell to 1-3-3.
