Jordan Chiles: American gymnast stripped of her bronze medal in floor exercises

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that the bronze medal awarded to American gymnast Jordan Chiles in the floor exercise at the Paris Games will be awarded to her Romanian counterpart Ana Bărbosu.

The move follows a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Saturday that the United States’ initial investigation into Chiles’ score in Monday’s gymnastics floor final was filed after the one-minute time limit.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) announced that Chiles’ initial score of 13.666 would be reinstated and Bărbosu’s ranking, with a score of 13.700, would be improved to third place.

And the IOC confirmed that the change in score would mean Chiles would be stripped of her bronze and given to Bărbosu.

“Following the CAS decision regarding the women’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise final and the change in ranking by the International Gymnastics Federation, the IOC will re-award the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu (Romania),” the IOC said in the statement.

“We are in contact with the Romanian NOC to discuss the re-awarding ceremony and with the USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal.”

CNN has reached out to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and USA Gymnastics to see if they will appeal to CAS. USA Gymnastics referred to its statement on Saturday saying it was “devastated” by the decision.

The competition ended in spectacular fashion on Monday. Just after the competition ended on Monday with Chiles’ performance, Bărbosu thought he had won the bronze medal with a score of 13.700.

Chiles had originally posted a score of 13.666 but her coaches successfully challenged the difficulty score which added 0.1 to her score and moved her up to third place, behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade and American Simone Biles.

Their appearance together on the first all-black Olympic gymnastics podium produced one of the most iconic images of the Games, as the Americans bowed to Andrade.

However, the CAS ruling that the investigation submitted on Chiles’ behalf “was raised after the one-minute time limit” stipulated in the rules cast doubt on Chiles’ medal.

Chiles posted on his Instagram account after the CAS decision four broken heart emojis and “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you.”
