It’s been several weeks for Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon.
Ten days ago, his interaction with running back Emari Demercado resulted in a six-figure fine. His response at a mid-week press conference on Wednesday was a real show-stopper.
“How early in your career did you have to start trying to figure out how to take the emotion out of coaching, when you had all these injuries and all these different pieces? » asked a journalist. “When is this the first time you remember this?” »
Said Gannon, without missing a beat: “2007, when our quarterback went to prison.”
Then came a second or two of total silence, until someone said, “Coach, thank you!”
Gannon was referring to his first season in the NFL. He came to the Falcons from Louisville with head coach Bobby Petrino. Gannon worked as a defensive quality control assistant in Atlanta.
In July of that year, Mike Vick was indicted on federal dogfight charges. Later that year, Petrino abruptly left for Arkansas.
Gannon spent the next three years scouting with the Rams. He returned to coaching in 2012 with the Titans. And his career grew from there.
This year, it’s the opposite. And he works for a franchise that hasn’t had the same head coach in over six years.
Gannon is in third grade. While today’s comment isn’t relevant to whether he’ll get a fourth, the odds are increasing against him getting a fourth.
