John O’Keefe’s brother speaks out on Karen Read mistrial

Paul O’Keefe, brother of the late John O’Keefe, is speaking out following Karen Read’s murder trial, which ended this week with a hung jury. O’Keefe said his family is now tired of keeping quiet about the case. He spoke one-on-one with NewsCenter 5’s David Bienick. Paul O’Keefe said his family didn’t speak publicly during the trial because they didn’t want to interfere with the prosecution and hoped justice would result in a guilty verdict for Read. Now that Read’s first trial has ended with a hung jury, he said he’s tired of keeping quiet. In 2013, Paul and John O’Keefe lost their sister Kristen to a brain tumor, and a few months later, Kristen’s husband had a heart attack. When John moved into their Canton home and became guardian to his young niece and nephew, Paul O’Keefe wasn’t surprised. “People say they’ll take their shirt off or do anything for anybody. But a lot of people don’t get a chance to prove it. And he definitely did. He proved it,” Paul O’Keefe said. In January 2022, when his brother John was found lying in a snowbank outside a Canton home, Paul O’Keefe said he didn’t know what had happened at first. Paul said when he saw his brother’s injuries, he immediately thought he’d been hit by a car. Hours later, when Read abruptly drove away, he became suspicious. “It hit me,” Paul O’Keefe said. “And I said, ‘Wow, yeah, she did.’” Over the next two and a half years, O’Keefe watched Read and his attorneys begin to talk about an alternative theory that someone else had killed his brother and that police had framed him to cover it up. “These are stories, lies, you know, innocent people’s lives ruined,” O’Keefe said. “I understand an aggressive defense strategy, but this is beyond any ethics.” At the beginning of each of the 29 days of testimony, O’Keefe led his family into the courtroom and took the same seat a few feet away from Karen Read and directly in front of the courtroom camera. “Nobody really wanted that first seat, I’m taking the camera for myself,” O’Keefe said. “But I also wanted Karen to know that I’m here. And I’m not going anywhere. And I’m going to be here every day.” » Paul O’Keefe had known Karen Read since 2020, when she rekindled an old relationship with her brother John, a Boston police officer. In 2022, Read was charged with killing John O’Keefe by ramming him with her SUV. During the trial, O’Keefe said he looked at Read and saw things the camera missed. “A lot of laughter, a lot of jokes, a lot of smiles,” O’Keefe said. “She didn’t look like someone who was on trial for second-degree murder of someone she supposedly loved,” O’Keefe said. He said he never believed Read’s defense story that someone else killed his brother and that police framed him to cover up the case. He said he was disappointed to see crowds of Read supporters outside the courthouse every day. “A group of people who are never going to be convinced,” Paul O’Keefe said. “That’s fine. And those are the people who are wearing their pink shirts and hanging out and having a good time while a murder trial is going on in the courthouse.” During closing arguments, he invited some of the people the defense tried to implicate in his brother’s death to sit with his family. “That was just our way of saying, you know, we don’t believe any of this,” Paul O’Keefe said. After the judge declared a mistrial, O’Keefe said Read turned and smiled at his wife, Erin. Then, as Read turned and hugged his father, O’Keefe walked by her and said something. “I just walked by her and said, ‘You’re not done yet.’ That’s it,” Paul O’Keefe said. Now the O’Keefes await a second trial for Karen Read and the results of a federal investigation that has been ongoing for more than a year.
