Joanna Newsom Honors Steve Albini at Kilby Block Party: Watch

In a surprise opening set for Fleet Foxes last year, which was her first show in over three years, Joanna Newsom debuted six new songs. Last night’s set at Kilby Block Party was his first concert since then, making it his first announced show since 2020 and his first US festival appearance since 2013. Newsom’s set included one of these new songs (” No Wonder”) and two songs of each. of his four LPs. Steve Albini designed his 2006 masterpiece Yes and Newsom, after saying it had been a sad few days since his death, paid tribute to the late underground rock icon with a short speech and a rendition of “Costia” from that album.

The great indie singer described Albini as someone “who I really like, who I admire in every way I can to admire a person,” she said. “I was telling my friend this morning that on the list of all the reasons he is my hero, music and music-related things don’t even make the top ten. He was extremely important in my musical life for so many years, but always as a human, as a person, as a hilarious, loving, loyal friend to so many people. I miss him. I’m going to miss him so much. I haven’t accepted it yet. He recorded the album the next song is on, as well as many other things I’ve done. I can’t believe I won’t get to record with him again, but I love Steve. I love you, Steve. This one is for you.”

Many musicians are mourning the loss of Albini, who died at age 61 earlier this week. On Thursday, Dave Grohl dedicated “My Hero” to Albini during a concert in Charlotte. We recently published one of Albini’s final interviews.
