Jets still haven’t completed Aaron Glenn deal

Dysfunctional teams do do dysfunctional things, and one of the most dysfunctional teams failed to do anything functional on Tuesday.

The Jets did not reach a deal with Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, their first choice as head coach, before he left the building.

It’s their choice. For the moment, they are not his. And the fact that he left New York without signing a contract is no different than leaving the parking lot without making a purchase. If the candidate needs to think about it, there is something worrying them. This makes him think. It makes him want to let things play out a little more, without worrying that the bird in his hand will fly away.

Fortunately for the Jets, a snowstorm delayed Glenn’s visit to New Orleans. However, with every minute that passes that Glenn doesn’t agree to terms with the Jets, there’s a chance he chooses the Saints.

Regarding the Jets’ lack of interest in Ben Johnson, it was rumored that the Jets didn’t want to have to draft someone to take the job. That same mindset apparently kept them from doing everything they needed to do to get Glenn to sign on the dotted line.

This is not surprising. Billionaires who own football teams are used to getting their butts kissed; they generally hate being the ones to kiss keisters.

It’s also no surprise that Glenn has reservations about working for Jets owner Woody Johnson, the common thread in a quarter-century of dysfunction. Given the choice between working for him and for Saints owner Gayle Benson, I know which one I would choose. And most in league circles would probably feel the same way.

We get involved. The other doesn’t. We can’t wait. The other is not. We make decisions based on Madden scores. The other no.

Maybe Glenn realized after meeting Woody that the Jets weren’t the right place to launch his head coaching career. Maybe the Jets didn’t say or do enough to convince him he was.
