Jets move to Aaron Glenn and Lance Newmark hire

11:12 p.m.: It doesn’t look like a deal will be reached tonight. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Glenn and Newmark left the Jets’ facilities without a deal. SNY.tv’s Connor Hughes warns that all sides will continue to talk, so there’s not much reason for concern within the Jets front office.

4:45 p.m.: The Jets’ obvious favorites are known when it comes to head coaching and general manager vacancies. DC Lions Aaron Glenn and Commanders’ AGM Lance Newmark are meeting in person with the team today, paving the way for a potential hire in both cases.

New York’s intention is to make a deal with Glenn before he leaves the facility; especially if that turns out to be the case, Newmark may soon agree to take on the role of general manager. The two worked together in Detroit, and Newmark is the only candidate so far who has met with the Jets for a second time regarding the general manager vacancy. This situation could give rise to two hires very soon.

Bovada’s Josina Anderson reports that optimism is growing regarding the integration of Glenn and Newmark. In either case, no deal has been finalized yet, but that could of course change at any time. Given that Glenn has already been in contact with potential candidates for a coordinator hire, it wouldn’t be surprising if he agreed to a deal in New York. However, if that doesn’t happen today, the Saints will continue to appear as an alternative destination.

The Newmark Commanders are one of four teams still playing, but like the Titans’ hiring of a former Chiefs manager Mike Borgonzi demonstrated, front office employees are free to join new teams at any time. Coaches whose season is over can’t do the same, but the Lions’ surprise loss this weekend left Glenn (with Ben Johnson) on the market sooner than expected.

The Jets relied heavily on the 33rd team Mike Tannenbaum And Rick Spielman to lead the search for HC and GM roles. Both processes have been far-reaching, but there are other signs that they have ended. SNY’s Connor Hughes reports that other candidates have been contacted and informed that they are not in the running, all but confirming that a Glenn-Newmark tandem will soon officially be in place.
